Who could go hungry in the middle of a grocery store? Or even better—who would?
Excess seems to pervade so much of our world lately—an obsessive drive to plant some flag—and that’s why, perhaps, that those who choose to get by with little, end up living with so much more.
I’m using the metaphor of food here, but I’m really talking about desire.
When you’re feeling love or compassion for someone, how much validation do you need from authority figures that what you’re feeling could crash the gates of Troy with the force of 10,000 waves?
You know in your heart that is what you feel.
In this self-knowledge, we find a way to cut through the temptations of greed and status seeking.
Just as a hungry person may find Zen-like satisfaction in a few humble seeds while sitting amidst aisles of disgusting Doritos, so too we are called to find satisfaction in the simple act of desiring something.
Yes, that leaves more questions than answers—but answers here are overrated.
We don’t need to chase prescriptions or programs or paradigms that would validate our desires and let us know they are true.
We don’t even need to have the object itself—because in needing that, our systems of control can hook us with said prescriptions and programs.
It’s fine to want something or somebody. But do you have to objectify them? Make a trophy of them?
“Ah yes, you want this type of job, spouse or role in the world—well, you’re going to need to do this this and this to prove you are worthy of desiring it. Because we all know that you have to get the thing you desire to prove that the desire was true in your heart from the beginning.”
No, the desire is true, a priori. We need to stop feeling like we must prove our hearts to external systems of measurement. The desire itself is enough, and we validate that through self-knowledge.
We’ve revealed the problem: the excess at our fingertips—“you could be this!”—is really a false treasure trove that charges us for every penny we’ve got. This is a famine masquerading as feast.
The enticing “abundance” around us is a siren song, a corrupt sideshow, asking us to abandon self-knowledge in favor of status games: “You, too, could have an answer to the question that is YOU.”
Steeply priced, it takes a deep toll: it gives you whatever you want in terms of worldliness, but you lose touch with yourself in the process.
Ah, to be emperor of the world – but a stranger to your own heart.
Labyrinth of Greed
Logic is getting lost in our cultural labyrinth of infinite biases, where slaves are “free” to chase bits of data to a predetermined finish.
A conscious minimalist does not enter such a labyrinth, though. A conscious minimalist travels in the shadowlands of their desires, accepting their destiny as a little roving question mark.
While others bounce around like Pac-Man—gobbling everything in sight, hoping for a certain payoff—the conscious minimalist operates from a position of freedom.
There is no compulsive need to see the world as a network of resources to be mined for the benefit of the insatiable ego.
Instead, there’s a realization that our desires can’t be ignored. They introduce uncertainty and risk. They are precious appetizers—riddles with no main course.
Why do they create such a problem for our highly utilitarian, transactional world? Because a desire can simultaneously be true in the past but no longer be true now.
Think of how your love evolves. You love someone differently as the relationship progresses. You haven’t stopped loving them—and yet, you can’t quite say the love is the same as it began.
Well, this does throw a wrench in the “winner take all” paradigm held by ravenous egos!
They prefer a world that is neat and linear and definitive…but in these shadowlands, things are constantly breaking down and re-forming.
It’s hard to say where change emanated from: did the desire change because you did, or did you change as the result of an evolving desire?
This Final Exam blurs the distinction between self and desire, so that we can understand a fundamental truth: if we alone validate our desire, and view it as an affirmation of our being, then we’re always king of our own mountain.
Angelic Emptiness
In the shadowlands of desire, there exists as much pain as pleasure. It is simultaneously empty and full. A splendorous void.
Pain is effort, work, patience, dedication, commitment…in essence, sacrifice.
Sacrifice is the true pleasure compared to the false titillation of striving to get some external trophy, such as a viral Tik Tok post.
Many times, sacrifice requires grieving—a process that our juvenile culture would probably call “cringe.” But grieving is important: it is where we reconcile past and present.
Reconciliation is where the worth of all enduring things derives from. Some call it balance or harmony. This is what the universe seeks.
We sacrifice our need for absolute certainty by loving that person, job or creative endeavor across time—acknowledging that we and our love itself will change in the process. We embrace that mystery rather than defile it with rational examination.
This is the “second chance” I’ve been talking about—the tender kiss awakening some Sleeping Beauty.
We can bring some person or project back into balance with our life, but it requires an honest relationship with our own desire.
Gripping love in your fist and saying “there it is, I have it now” is precisely the gluttonous illusion we are encouraged to perpetuate in modern society.
Planning its own funeral, demolishing its own structure, our society is headed towards the endgame of self-hollowed greed.
But we don’t have to be a part of this manmade nightmare.
We can step aside and experience angelic emptiness.
Desire plays an endless angel beat in our heart, pointing to forces beyond time.
It is so soft, it will kill you with its unbearable beauty, so you can be reborn lighter than ever.
Oh, did you think surrendering to love was for the weak?
